The rising wave of college internet crimes

As the internet’s capabilities and society’s dependency on the web continue to grow and expand, the number of crimes performed online are also rising at astronomical rates. College students in Michigan are frequently finding themselves involved in these acts, whether they are unknowingly committing a crime or becoming a victim to one. We at The Law Office of Gary Michael Gabry not only know how to defend you if you have been subjected to a criminal act, but also how to defend you if you find you have committed one.

According to the Purdue Exponent, many people do not recognize an internet crime when they see one. Often, malware can be opened when college students are doing research for papers or downloading and updating computer programs. While privacy and anti-spyware programs are helpful, university databases can also be breached and personal information can be leaked.

While it would be difficult for you to create a malware program or steal someone’s identity without realizing you are doing something illegal, there are other actions that are being termed internet crimes and punishable with fines and jail time. These can include cyber bullying over social media sites, using the internet to solicit a minor, or accessing or distributing child pornography images.

As more and more personal information is being stored online, internet crimes are becoming a bigger problem. For more information on the types of internet crimes you can commit and what you can do if you are accused of one, please visit our web page.
