What happens if you get a second DUI conviction?

Getting a DUI once can be troubling enough. But if you receive another DUI within seven years of your first one, you may face more severe penalties.

One sentence you could receive is a suspension of your driver's license for up to a year. In this case, you might need to attend DUI classes to earn back your license. Furthermore, you could get charged with a $200 to $1,000 fine. You may also risk landing in jail from five days to one year. Also, the court could order you to do between 30 and 90 days of community service. Finally, the court may install an ignition interlock device in your car. This instrument makes it impossible to start your car if you aren't able to pass a breathalyzer test.

The state of Michigan regards a second instance of a DUI as a misdemeanor. But, it would be a felony if the DUI lead to serious injury or death. Regardless, you would be able to plead guilty, not guilty, or negotiate a plea deal in either case.
