Man charged with DUI — for caffeine

Yes, you read that headline right. A man was driving out in Solano County California in the summer of 2015 when a police officer pulled him over for allegedly weaving through traffic. During the stop, the officer claimed that the man was combative, had dilated pupils and was "amped up." The driver was given a blood test and it came back with one positive: caffeine. Not one drug, not a drop of alcohol. Still, the officers arrested the man and charged him with a DUI.

For 16 months, the man faced charges of both reckless driving and driving under the influence. Finally, in late December of 2016, the district attorney's office in the area was forced to drop the charge because they believed they couldn't prove it beyond a reasonable doubt.

Critics of the case say the officers and the district attorney were overzealous in their prosecution and charged a man, even when the evidence on the scene cleared him. And, even though the charges have been dropped, the man's life has been interrupted for 16 months and his reputation at work, at school and in the community has taken an unwarranted hit.

A case like this one brings to light a vital point: the criminal justice system doesn't always get it right. If you're facing a DUI or OWI charges, you have a right to fight them. An attorney who's well-versed in criminal defense can look into your case and may be able to help you reduce the charges or get them dropped altogether.
