Being charged with cyber stalking may result in a prison sentence

Logging into cyber space exposes you to many vulnerabilities and risks. As Internet expands into our routine activities, it has become part of our physical reality. This means that rules and laws that we previously had for in person exchange may also apply to conduct over electronic mediums. Such medium can include email, social media and other online forums. In such circumstances, it is important to make sure that not only do you stay safe from the risks but also protect yourself from ending up in a situation where you might be vulnerable to being prosecuted.

In addition to laws against major cyber crimes, the state of Michigan also has a Cyberstalking Law, which is also known as Cyber Harassment law. The law is enforced if a person feels emotionally or physically threatened or harassed over any electronic medium. If charged under this law, you may face up to two years of prison and/or a fine of up to $5,000.

In certain circumstances, such as, when the petitioner is a minor and the accused is five or more than five years older than the petitioner, the sentence may be extended up to ten years of prison and/or $10,000 fine. Other circumstances, which may result in an extended sentence, include but are not limited to, a situation where the petitioner feels that there is a legitimate physical threat to them or their family or if the contact was in violation of a restraining order.

Being charged under the Cyber Harassment Law is a serious offense, which may not only result in a prison sentence, but may also affect your chances of success in life later on. If you are being accused of cyber harassment or stalking, you might want to consider taking help of a lawyer to present your case skillfully.
