Portage, Michigan

Gary was admitted to the Michigan Bar and United States Eastern District in May of 1979 after graduation from what is now Michigan State University College of Law. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Michigan.

After graduation Gary was appointed Assistant Prosecutor for Ionia County Michigan and after five years was elected twice as the Prosecuting Attorney. While serving in that capacity Gary successfully investigated and tried over 20 high profile murder cases as well as sexual assaults and drug cases. His expertise and leadership qualities were recognized by his peers when he was elected President of the Prosecuting Attorneys Association.

His organizational skills and commitment to his job resulted in being appointed to the criminal task forces of two Michigan Governors, culminating in his appointment as Chairman of the Michigan Parole Board. There he oversaw the reinvention of the parole system as it is now known in Michigan. After a four year term on the Board he returned to the courtroom as a Senior Assistant in Kent County Michigan. Here he continued to excel in the courtroom becoming one of the top trial attorneys in Grand Rapids.

In 2003 Gary returned to his childhood home and entered private practice specializing in litigation. He was elected chair of the Criminal Law section of the Michigan State Bar. In private practice he has successfully resolved hundreds of cases in which the residents of southwest Michigan counties find themselves prosecuted in State and Federal Courts. Crimes, ranging from murder, sexual assaults, arson, welfare fraud, and drug trafficking. He has won acquittals in multiple capital cases including homicide and first degree criminal sexual conduct, returning wrongfully accused fathers to their families.

In addition to criminal cases, Gary represented citizens in civil litigation either prosecuting their civil suit or defending them. Gary's experience both as a prosecutor whose county housed five state prison facilities and as Chair of the Parole Board has given him the unique status of one of the few attorneys with practical experience in risk assessment, corrections, parole and parole revocation.
